Preventive health in Townsville: screenings, check-ups and staying well

What's free, what's funded and what to ask your GP for, with an age-by-age guide to keep Townsville households on top of preventive care.

Free cancer screening programs for Townsville residents

Three national programs, all free and with no referral needed for eligible ages: BreastScreen (women aged 40 to 74, mammogram every 2 years); National Bowel Cancer Screening Program (ages 45 to 74, free immunochemical test kit sent by post every 2 years); and the National Cervical Screening Program (women and people with a cervix aged 25 to 74, Cervical Screening Test every 5 years).

Heart Health Checks in Townsville

The Medicare-funded Heart Health Check is free with your GP and available from age 45, or 30+ for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. It covers blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar, BMI, smoking status and family history, and calculates your 5-year cardiovascular risk. Ask your GP to book a longer appointment.

Diabetes prevention in Townsville

Healthier. Happier. Queensland Health programs and the federal Healthier Lifestyles initiative offer free 12-month support for people at risk of type 2 diabetes. For people already diagnosed, the National Diabetes Services Scheme (NDSS) provides subsidised supplies (strips, syringes, pumps consumables). Your GP can register you for the NDSS in one appointment.
