Townsville Hospital recorded a 22 percent rise in referrals for sleep studies in the first half of 2026 compared with the same period last year.

Health workers trace the increase to longer work hours and irregular shifts common among port and hospital staff. Residents who once ignored daytime fatigue now seek formal testing after reading that untreated sleep apnoea raises blood-pressure risks. The timing aligns with Medicare rebates that cover part of the cost for eligible patients referred by a GP.

Where to book a study in Townsville

The public sleep laboratory at Townsville Hospital on Eyre Street runs weekday and weekend overnight tests. Patients arrive by 7 pm, are fitted with sensors, and leave by 7 am the next morning. A second option sits two blocks from The Strand at North Queensland Respiratory and Sleep on Flinders Street. That clinic added two new beds in March 2026 and accepts both public and private bookings. Staff there also run daytime multiple-sleep-latency tests for shift workers who live near Castle Hill.

Both sites require a referral letter that notes symptoms such as loud snoring or morning headaches. Magnetic Island residents can arrange transport through the hospital’s patient-assist program, which books the 6:30 am ferry return after testing.

Costs and waiting times

A standard overnight polysomnography at the public hospital costs $280 out of pocket after the Medicare rebate. Private testing at the Flinders Street site averages $520 before any health-fund gap. Current wait times sit at 18 days for the hospital lab and nine days for the private clinic, according to appointment data released this week. Townsville Hospital performed 312 studies between January and June 2026.

Doctors advise patients to keep a two-week sleep diary before the appointment. Simple changes such as finishing the 2.5 km Castle Hill climb before 7 am or avoiding late meals at Strand Waterpark cafes often improve readings on the first test. Anyone experiencing persistent tiredness should speak with their GP about a referral rather than self-diagnosing.
