Residents who complete the 2.5km Castle Hill climb at least four times a week record a 25 percent drop in self-reported anxiety scores after eight weeks, according to data collected by Townsville Hospital’s outpatient mental health unit.

The finding arrives as more locals seek non-medication options amid rising stress tied to work pressures and seasonal heat. Townsville Hospital noted a 14 percent increase in anxiety-related presentations between January and June this year compared with the same period in 2025.

Castle Hill and Strand routines deliver measurable relief

Early-morning groups now meet at the base of Castle Hill on Stanley Street before heading up the sealed road to the summit. Participants finish the round trip in under 45 minutes and often continue to the Strand Waterpark for cool-down stretches along the beachfront path. Both sites sit within easy reach of central Townsville neighbourhoods, removing the need for long travel that can itself add stress.

Townsville City Council’s active-living program has tracked participation at these two locations since March 2025. The data show consistent attendance on weekdays, with numbers peaking between 6am and 7am when temperatures remain below 24 degrees.

Evidence supports small, regular sessions

A 2024 review by the National Health and Medical Research Council found that 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week lowers generalised anxiety scores by an average of 20 percent across adult populations. Local figures from Townsville Hospital align with that benchmark when residents stick to the Castle Hill or Strand routes four or more days each week.

Those who combine the climb with a short swim at the waterpark report further gains, likely because the routine adds both aerobic effort and social contact. The hospital unit now offers free weekly check-ins for anyone logging activity on its simple paper form, with the next session scheduled for 15 July at the hospital’s Eyre Street entrance.

Anyone starting a new routine should check with their GP first, particularly in Townsville’s summer conditions. The hospital advises beginning with two shorter sessions and building gradually rather than attempting daily full climbs from the outset.
