Cycling in Townsville: Paths, The Strand and the River Trail

Townsville has an extensive shared path network for a regional city, with the most popular routes running along The Strand foreshore and extending south through the CBD along the Ross River corridor. The Ross River Path runs approximately 30 kilometres along both banks of the river, linking suburbs from Bohle in the north to Kelso in the south, and is popular for commuting and recreational riding. The Palmetum (Botanic Gardens) section along the river near Aitkenvale is a particularly scenic portion. Castle Hill can be reached by road for those wanting an ascent challenge. The Townsville City Council publishes an updated cycling map. Hire bikes and e-bikes are available from several outlets in the CBD and near The Strand. Riding in the early morning or evening is advisable during the hotter months.
