Best Parks in Townsville: Castle Hill, The Strand Foreshore and Coastal Wetlands
Townsville is well equipped with public parks and natural recreation spaces, from the dramatic Castle Hill summit walk to the 2.5 km beachfront Strand foreshore park that is the city's most popular outdoor gathering space. Castle Hill rises 286 metres directly above the CBD and is one of the most distinctive city summits in Australia, accessible via a walking track from the CBD that provides outstanding 360-degree views across Townsville, Cleveland Bay and Magnetic Island from the summit. The Strand foreshore park on The Strand on the northern beaches of Townsville includes a wave pool, public barbecue facilities, playground equipment, walking and cycling paths and several cafe and kiosk operations along its length, serving as the city's primary urban recreation corridor. The Town Common Conservation Park north of the city centre is a significant bird habitat and wetland reserve with brolgas, magpie geese and other waterbirds, accessible by 4WD track in the dry season for wildlife watching. The Queens Gardens on Paxton Street in the CBD is a heritage-listed botanical garden with a duck pond and established plantings. Bicentennial Park on The Strand at the southern end has event facilities. The Townsville Beaches foreshore from the North Ward to Rowes Bay provides open beach and foreshore access for swimming and recreation.
