Best Seafood in Townsville: Fresh Catch on the North Queensland Coast

Townsville's position on the North Queensland coast and its proximity to the Coral Sea means access to some of the freshest seafood in Australia. Coral trout, red emperor, barramundi, mud crab, prawns and various reef fish land regularly through the local commercial fleet, and several restaurants and fish markets make the most of that supply. The Strand waterfront dining strip has the highest concentration of seafood restaurants, with views across Magnetic Island providing an outstanding setting. The Townsville Seafood Market on Duckworth Street in Garbutt sells fresh catch direct, which is the most economical way to buy quality local fish. Several of the northern beaches' restaurants, particularly around the Rowes Bay area, also specialise in fresh local seafood. In season, mud crab and reef fish should be ordered as the priority; asking what was landed most recently is the reliable approach.
