Senior Fitness Programs Offered Free by Local Council
Townsville City Council has expanded its no-cost exercise sessions for residents aged 60 and over across multiple sites this July.
How we reported this

Townsville City Council began free senior fitness classes on 1 July 2026 at two central locations, with sessions running three mornings each week.
Regional health data shows that one in three Townsville adults over 65 reports low physical activity levels, a figure that has held steady since the 2023 census. Council officers say the new timetable responds to requests from residents who want supervised movement options without leaving their own neighbourhoods.
The Active Seniors program meets at The Strand Waterpark every Monday and Wednesday at 8 am, using the flat paths beside the beach strip for low-impact walking circuits. A second group gathers on Fridays at the base of Castle Hill for a 1 km loop that avoids the steeper 2.5 km summit track.
Classes target balance and strength
Instructors from the council’s community services team lead chair-based resistance work and gentle mobility drills at both sites. Participants receive printed exercise sheets to take home, and sessions finish with advice on hydration suited to Townsville’s winter humidity.
Numbers and next steps
Last financial year the same council ran 48 senior sessions that recorded 1,872 attendances, according to the 2025 annual report. No bookings are required, though spaces are limited to 25 people per class. Residents who want to join should arrive 10 minutes early with a water bottle and comfortable shoes. Anyone with an existing medical condition is advised to speak with their GP or staff at Townsville Hospital before starting.
Further details appear on the Townsville City Council website under community programs, and printed flyers are available at the Civic Theatre box office on Walker Street.
