Outdoor boot camp numbers in Townsville have risen sharply, with six new weekly classes added since April at Castle Hill and the Strand Waterpark beach strip.

July marks the start of the cooler season here, when locals look for group exercise that fits around work and family schedules without needing indoor gym memberships. Townsville City Council opened extra park permits this year to meet demand for early morning and evening slots away from peak heat.

One established option meets Tuesdays and Fridays at 6am on the lower slopes of Castle Hill, where the 2.5km climb serves as the main circuit route. Another runs Saturday mornings beside the Strand Waterpark, using the beachfront path and nearby grass for bodyweight drills and partner work. Both draw residents from Railway Estate and Belgian Gardens who walk or cycle to the sites.

Council figures released last month recorded 1,450 unique participants across all registered outdoor groups in June, up from 980 the same month in 2025. Drop-in fees sit at $15 for a 45-minute session, with monthly passes available for $110 through the Townsville Parks and Recreation office.

Typical session flow

A standard boot camp begins with a five-minute walk or light jog to the meeting point, followed by dynamic stretches. Instructors then move the group through timed stations that include hill repeats on Castle Hill tracks, push-up variations on the Strand promenade railings, and core circuits using bodyweight only. Sessions finish with a cool-down walk back along the water's edge. Newcomers receive scaled options, such as shorter hill segments or knee-friendly modifications, to match different fitness levels.

Participants are advised to bring a water bottle, towel and supportive shoes. Groups pause briefly at the 20-minute mark for hydration, especially on days when the breeze off Magnetic Island drops.

Getting started locally

Check the Townsville City Council website for updated timetables or visit the Strand Waterpark noticeboard on weekday mornings. First-timers can attend a single session before committing. Residents with existing injuries should speak with staff at Townsville Hospital outpatient services before joining high-impact drills. Many groups also list start times on community noticeboards at the Aitkenvale Library.
