Routes that stay level and visible
The first marked loop begins at Strand Waterpark, follows the beachfront path past the water slides, then turns inland on a new 1.8-metre-wide lane along Flinders Street East before returning via the landscaped strip beside Townsville Hospital. A second option starts at the base of Castle Hill on Stanley Street and uses the existing footpath widening completed last December to reach Anderson Park, staying under three metres of elevation the whole way. Both routes received fresh line marking and solar-powered lights in the past fortnight.
Townsville Bike Share recorded 1,872 family rentals in the first six months of 2026, up from 1,210 the same period last year, with the most popular pick-up point remaining the kiosk at Strand Waterpark where a standard adult bike costs $12 for two hours and a child trailer adds $8.
How to begin this weekend
Parents can collect helmets and a route map at the Strand Waterpark entrance any day from 7am, then ride the waterfront section first before attempting the Castle Hill link once children feel steady. Riders are advised to check the Townsville City Council website for any temporary closures after heavy rain and to carry water, as the nearest public fountain on the Strand loop sits 2.3 kilometres from the start.
