Townsville families have booked more than 4,200 tickets to Reef HQ Aquarium in the first week of July 2026, a 17 percent rise on the same period last year.

The increase arrives as the second week of North Queensland school holidays begins, giving working parents a short window to find activities that keep children occupied without requiring long drives or high costs.

Reef HQ Aquarium on Flinders Street East runs daily 9:30am to 4pm sessions where children can watch divers feed sharks and turtles inside the 750,000-litre coral reef tank. A short walk away, the Townsville Maritime Museum on the same street offers free entry for under-5s and runs a 45-minute shipwreck scavenger hunt every Saturday morning during the holidays.

Strand playground upgrades draw repeat visits

The Strand waterfront between Kissing Point and the Rockpool continues to host free daily playground sessions run by Townsville City Council lifeguards. Families also head to the Billabong Sanctuary on Hervey Range Road for the 11am koala talk and the 2pm crocodile feeding, both included in the $38 adult and $22 child day pass that has remained unchanged since January.

Visitor data released by Townsville Enterprise shows 68,500 people attended family programs at these three sites combined in the 2025 calendar year, with an average spend of $27 per child on food and souvenirs.

Practical steps before heading out

Tickets for Reef HQ can be purchased online up to 24 hours ahead to avoid the 20-minute queue that forms at the Flinders Street entrance after 10am. The Maritime Museum accepts cash only at its gift shop, so families should carry small notes. Billabong Sanctuary advises arriving before 10:30am on weekdays to secure shaded picnic tables near the main lawn. All three venues recommend closed shoes and hats, with temperatures forecast to reach 26 degrees this weekend.
