Townsville Strand Sunday Markets opened their July season last weekend with no gate fee for visitors but a new $4 hourly rate at the nearby car park on The Strand.

The change matters now because winter weekends have become the peak time for locals to seek low-cost outdoor options as household budgets tighten after recent fuel price spikes.

Regulars set up stalls between the Rockpool and the old jetty while another smaller cluster operates at Flinders Mall under a Townsville City Council permit program that runs through September.

Sealink buses from the city interchange to The Strand stop cost $2.50 each way on weekends with services every 20 minutes starting at 6am.

Getting There and Parking

Drivers can use the metered spots along The Strand or the multi-level facility behind the Entertainment Centre where the first two hours remain free before the $4 rate kicks in.

Those arriving by bike find racks at both ends of the market stretch and the council has added extra lighting this season after reports of evening thefts last year.

Prices and Practical Details

Market data from last winter showed an average 12,400 visitors across the four peak Sundays with typical spending at $22 per person on food and goods.

Stallholders report coffee prices holding at $5.50 while fresh produce bundles start at $8 and handmade items range from $15 to $45.

Organisers advise checking the Townsville Enterprise website the night before for any weather-related changes and to bring cash since several vendors still do not accept cards.

Early arrivals before 8am avoid the main rush and secure better parking near the markets at both The Strand and Flinders Mall locations.
