Townsville's Strand Upgrades Draw Evening Crowds to Waterfront

Townsville City Council completed solar lighting and additional seating along The Strand in late May, allowing safe access after dark for the first time on a full stretch from the Rockpool to the southern end near Palmer Street.

The upgrades arrived as winter temperatures dropped into the low twenties at night, giving residents a practical reason to leave air-conditioned homes without needing heavy jackets or early returns.

Two venues anchor the new routine

Walkers now loop past the Townsville Yacht Club before stopping at the revived weekend stalls outside the Perc Tucker Regional Gallery, where local growers set up from 5pm on Fridays. Further along, the Riverway Arts Centre extended its café hours to 9pm on Saturdays, offering a second gathering point with direct views of the river.

Both sites sit within a 15-minute walk of each other, so families split time between the two without driving.

Council data released this week shows a 28 percent rise in evening foot traffic on The Strand during the first full week of July 2026 compared with the same period last year. The average spend at the Friday stalls reached $18 per person, according to stallholder reports collected by the council’s economic development team.

Practical steps for first-time visitors

Arrive after 5:30pm to catch both the gallery stalls and the Riverway café before last orders. Bring a reusable bag for market produce and check the Townsville City Council website for any temporary road closures around the Rockpool during peak events. The lighting stays on until midnight, so no rush is needed to finish a loop.
