Townsville Ferry Fares Rise: New July Costs and Booking Rules Explained

Ferry operators lifted adult return fares to Magnetic Island to $42 from 1 July, up from $38 last winter, with the change hitting peak Saturday sailings hardest.

The increase coincides with stronger demand as locals seek cooler island breezes during the dry season, when daytime temperatures hover around 24 degrees. Townsville City Council recorded a 14 percent rise in weekend ferry bookings between May and June compared with the same period in 2025.

Terminal access and parking

Most departures leave from the Breakwater Terminal on Sir Leslie Thiess Drive, where paid parking costs $8 for the first four hours and $15 for a full day. Drivers heading to the island can also use the secured lot at the nearby Flinders Street East interchange, which charges a flat $12 weekend rate and runs a free shuttle every 15 minutes. On the island side, the Picnic Bay jetty offers limited drop-off zones, while Horseshoe Bay has a new 120-space overflow car park opened by the council in April.

SeaLink Queensland, the sole operator on the route, runs 12 daily services from Townsville with the earliest departure at 5:45am and the last return at 10:15pm. Foot passengers without vehicles board first, cutting wait times at the terminal to under 10 minutes on weekdays.

Tickets, concessions and extras

Concession returns sit at $32, while children aged four to 14 pay $21. A family pass covering two adults and two children costs $95. Vehicle space on the 45-minute crossing now requires advance reservation at $28 each way, with only 18 spots available on most sailings. Bicycles travel free if secured in the designated racks.

Current schedules show Saturday departures every 45 minutes between 8am and noon, after which intervals stretch to 90 minutes. Passengers are advised to arrive 30 minutes before departure, as check-in closes five minutes prior. Online booking through the operator’s site or app guarantees a seat and avoids the $5 on-the-day surcharge.

Island visitors should carry cash for smaller vendors along The Strand extension in Picnic Bay, where several food stalls do not accept cards. The new council app provides real-time ferry updates and parking availability at both terminals, updated every two minutes during operating hours.
