Townsville locals built the city's newest arts project from scratch over 18 months.

Townsville's newest installation of five interactive light sculptures opened on The Strand on July 5 after 18 months of work by a Railway Estate collective.
The project arrives as Townsville City Council pushes to expand cultural offerings along the waterfront to draw more evening visitors. Earlier efforts at the same site focused on static seating and basic lighting upgrades completed in 2023.
Workshops on Flinders Street
Creators met weekly at Umbrella Studio on Flinders Street to test materials and wiring. They also used the North Queensland Writers Centre on Sturt Street for planning sessions that shaped the final layout. Both venues supplied tools and storage without charge during the build phase.
The group logged 4,200 volunteer hours across the project. Materials came from local suppliers on Ingham Road. Total outlay reached $87,000, covered by a combination of council grants and private donations recorded in May this year.
Visitor access from next week
Residents can view the sculptures each evening from 6pm until 10pm. Guided tours start July 19 at the Breakwater end of The Strand and cost $15 per adult. Advance tickets are available through the Townsville Civic Theatre box office on Boundary Street.
Organisers plan to add two more pieces by December if further funding arrives. Details on the next application round will appear on the council website by August.
