Townsville Mosaic Firm Leads Ethical Design Push in North Queensland
Reef Mosaic Designs has expanded its operations from a Flinders Street workshop to an online platform that protects local patterns while serving customers across Australia.
How we reported this

Reef Mosaic Designs reported a 42 percent rise in custom orders during the first half of 2026, driven by buyers seeking protected local patterns rather than mass-produced imports.
The increase comes as national attention turns to design theft cases involving overseas platforms, making Townsville businesses more cautious about where they sell original work. Local makers say customers now ask directly about ownership rights before purchasing.
Expansion from Workshop to Online Sales
The company operates its main studio on Flinders Street in the Townsville CBD and runs weekend pop-ups at the Strand Markets every second Saturday. It also partners with the Townsville Enterprise business accelerator program, which provides mentoring on digital sales and intellectual property. These locations give the firm direct contact with both residents and visitors who want pieces tied to the region’s coastal and reef imagery.
Founder-led production keeps most work in-house, with four full-time staff and two apprentices handling the cutting and assembly of each mosaic. Orders placed through the company website now account for 65 percent of revenue, up from 30 percent in 2024.
Numbers Behind the Growth
Reef Mosaic Designs completed 318 commissions between January and June this year, with average order value at $285. The firm recorded zero design disputes on its own platform during that period, a point it highlights in marketing materials sent to corporate clients such as The Ville resort and James Cook University events team. A single large installation for a new office fit-out on Ross River Road in June contributed $12,400 to monthly figures.
Prices for smaller wall pieces start at $145, while larger custom works for commercial spaces range from $1,800 to $4,500 depending on size and materials.
Customers can view stock and place orders at the Flinders Street studio during weekday hours or through the website, which now includes a verification step confirming each design remains under local ownership. The business plans to add two more apprentices by October and will exhibit at the Townsville Show in August to reach new buyers outside its current postcode base.
