Townsville entrepreneur launches resilient digital marketplace on Flinders Street
Rivera Ventures adapts supply chain tools for local makers facing national service disruptions.
How we reported this

Rivera Ventures opened its expanded digital platform from a Flinders Street office on 8 July, giving Townsville makers direct access to buyers across northern Australia without relying on overseas marketplaces.
The move comes as national telecommunications outages and falling home prices squeeze small operators who need reliable online sales channels. Businesses in regional centres like Townsville now seek local alternatives that keep transaction data onshore and avoid the premium fees charged by larger providers.
Local roots drive platform growth
The company operates from a converted warehouse near the Flinders Street Mall and maintains a pop-up showroom on The Strand that hosts weekly maker demonstrations. Rivera Ventures has partnered with the Townsville Enterprise accelerator program and the North Queensland Small Business Association to run training sessions for vendors on inventory software and local delivery routes.
These ties give the platform access to established networks that stretch from the Ross River industrial precinct to the Port of Townsville logistics corridor. Vendors report faster settlement times compared with international platforms because payments clear through a local bank partner rather than offshore processors.
Numbers show steady uptake
Internal records released this week show 187 active Townsville vendors on the platform as of 1 July, up from 112 at the same date last year. Average sale value sits at $187, with the company taking a flat 6 per cent fee. A Townsville Chamber of Commerce survey released in May recorded a 31 per cent rise in online transactions among member firms between January and April 2026.
Platform founder data also indicates that 42 per cent of current sellers previously used overseas sites before switching after the May telecommunications outage disrupted order tracking for three days.
Businesses interested in joining can attend a free workshop scheduled for 22 July at the Townsville City Library auditorium. Registration opens through the company website, and participants receive a one-month fee waiver plus integration support for existing point-of-sale systems already used on Flinders Street.
